One of the first questions travelers ask us is simple: when should I come? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is one of the best-kept secrets in surfing. Nicaragua works almost all year round. Thanks to a rare geographic quirk, the waves here are good in seasons that shut down other destinations. Still, "good all year" does not mean "identical all year." Each month has its own personality, and knowing the differences helps you plan the trip that fits you best.
Here is our honest, month-by-month guide to the best time to surf in Nicaragua, straight from the lineup at Miramar SurfCamp in Puerto Sandino.
Why Nicaragua Surfs Almost Every Day
Most surf destinations live and die by the wind. Nicaragua does not, and that is the whole story.
Just inland from the coast sits Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. The gap in the mountains around the lake funnels wind from the Caribbean side across the country and out to sea. The result is offshore wind blowing into the waves more than 300 days a year. Offshore wind is the magic ingredient every surfer chases: it holds the wave face up, cleans it, and grooms it into those long, hollow walls you see in the photos.
So while other coastlines wait for the wind to cooperate, ours cooperates by default. Add water that stays warm year-round and you have a place where the question is rarely "are there waves?" but "which season suits me?"
The Two Seasons: Dry and Green
Nicaragua has two seasons rather than four, and both surf well.
The dry season runs roughly from November to April. Skies are blue, the landscape turns golden, and rain is scarce. This is the classic postcard version of Nicaragua and the most popular time to visit.
The green season (sometimes called the wet season) runs roughly from May to October. Do not let the name scare you off. Rain usually comes in short afternoon or overnight bursts, leaving mornings clean and glassy. The countryside turns a vivid, jungle green, prices are gentler, and the lineups are quieter. Many of our returning guests actually prefer it.
Month by Month at a Glance
November to February brings the driest, sunniest weather of the year, steady offshore wind, and consistent fun-sized to solid swell. It is peak season for a reason. Book early if these are your dates.
March and April stay dry and warm, with the water heating up and reliable waves. April in particular is a sweet spot: great conditions with slightly thinner crowds than the holiday months.
May and June mark the start of the green season and, for many, the start of the best swell. The south swell machine in the Pacific begins to fire, sending in more powerful waves while mornings stay clean and offshore.
July and August are, in our experience, some of the most consistent surfing months of the entire year. Solid south swells, warm water, and empty peaks in the early light. If you want size and space, this is your window.
September and October are the rainiest months but also deliver excellent, powerful swell. Fewer travelers, lush surroundings, and waves for those willing to trade a little sunshine for a lot of quality.
The Best Waves for Your Level
Beyond the calendar, the right time also depends on the kind of surfer you are.
If you are learning or intermediate, the shoulder months on either side of peak swell tend to be friendlier. Waves are still consistent but a touch more forgiving, and the beach breaks around camp give you room to build confidence.
If you are experienced and chasing power, the heart of the green season (roughly June through September) sends the biggest, most hollow south swells into our main breaks. Punta Miramar and Puerto Sandino come alive during these swells, with Puerto Sandino's long left earning its reputation among the traveling surfers who know it.
Crowds, Prices, and the Quiet Advantage
Timing is not only about waves. It is about the whole trip.
The dry season delivers the sunshine and the certainty, but it also brings the most visitors and the highest demand for rooms. The green season flips that equation: softer prices, more availability, and a lineup you often share with only a handful of other guests. For travelers who value space in the water and value in the wallet, the "off" season is quietly the smart season.
Whichever window you choose, the water stays warm enough that you will not need more than boardshorts or a bikini, and the offshore wind keeps doing its job in the background.
So, When Should You Come?
If you want blue skies, easy logistics, and a lively camp atmosphere, aim for the dry season between December and April. If you want the best swell, the quietest lineups, and the friendliest prices, come during the green season between May and October, with July and August standing out as our favorites.
There is no wrong answer here. That is the luxury of a coastline that works more than 300 days a year. We are only about an hour and a half from Managua, so getting from the airport to the first paddle-out is easier than you might expect, no matter the month you land.
Pick the season that matches the trip you are dreaming of, and let the offshore wind take care of the rest.
